There is a 400-year-old oak near my village. I have walked past it thousands of times. For this quest I sat at its base for two hours with a notebook. What I noticed: the sound of the wind through its canopy changes throughout the day. Birds use different branches at different times. The tree already knows you are coming. It has felt the change in the air around you before you sat down.
What I have seen, in people who do this honestly, is that the tree does not speak in words. It speaks in something older, a knowing that moves through your body before your mind catches it. You may feel it as stillness, or as a sudden clarity you cannot account for.
Go. Sit close enough to touch the bark. Stay longer than feels comfortable. The conversation begins when you stop waiting for it.
